How to Make Candles with Essential Oils

How to Make Candles with Essential Oils

Imagine a rose scented candle gently flickering in your room. It smells rich and the serenity of the moment makes you smile. That is the magic of an essential oil infused candle. Little joys such as having a customised candle bearing your favourite scent should be shared. This is why Aromachology introduces its little guide on how to make handcrafted candles at home. From how to make candle wax to how much essential oil to add to candle, this guide covers all necessary details and more.

How to Make Scented Candles with Essential Oils

Making scented candles with essential oils is honestly the easiest thing ever. All that the task entails is having to melt and mix the right ingredients. I bet all that mixing and melting wax is going to give you those crazy wizarding world vibes. Here is a Potterhead approved essential oil candle recipe to get things started -

Candle Recipe

For this Amortentia potion inspired candle recipe, you’re going to need -

  1. Soy wax pellets

  2. Coconut oil

  3. Candle wick

  4. 13 drops of Rose essential oil

  5. 7 drops of Cinnamon bark essential oil

  6. 7 drops of Cedarwood essential oil

  7. 3 drops of our special rose paradise fragrance oil

  8. Heat resistant glass jars with lid

Here are the step by step instructions to make everything effortless for you-

  1. Take about 1 and a half cup of soy wax pellets and 3 teaspoons of coconut oil in a container. Keep stirring as you melt these ingredients.

  2. Take off the heat and add 13 drops of rose essential oil, 7 drops of cinnamon bark essential oil and another 7 drops of cedarwood essential oil.

  3. Quickly add 3 drops of our rose paradise fragrance oil before the mixture cools and hardens.

  4. Mix well and pour in the concoction in pre-prepared jars with a wick.

  5. Let it set, and then cover the jar with a lid to prevent the candle from losing its scent.

Tips for a Better Candle-Making Experience

Here are some of the tips that I have learned over time that can make your candle making experience more seamless and enjoyable -

  1. Gather all your ingredients first. This prevents last minute frantic scrambling for ingredients as you fear your candle mix will harden.

  2. It’s obvious that essential oils are flammable substances, so don’t add them while you’re melting your wax.

  3. Use a funnel to transfer the candle wax into the jar. This minimises the chances of getting 2nd degree burns from the scalding hot wax.

  4. At the beginning, take the wicks that have a long length, but cut away the excess part after the candle is made. Trimmed wicks mean shorter flames, and shorter flames mean a longer candle life.

Common Issues

For getting your candles to smell and look exactly like you had imagined them to be, try to apply these simple tricks. These will prevent the common issues that chandlers often face.

  1. Use a combination of fragrance oils and essential oils to make sure the scent turns out as expected.

  2. Ensure that the wax is at the correct temperature before pouring into molds or jars. This prevents lumps from ruining the aesthetic appeal of your candles.

  3. Gently tap the candle jar after pouring in the wax to prevent air bubbles from being formed in the candle.

  4. Stir constantly after adding the essential oils to prevent uneven distribution of scent.

Why Use Essential Oils in Candles?

Candles make the most inoffensive and perfect gifts for anyone. Whatever the occasion, whether it's your friend’s birthday, or mother’s day or when you have to give out wedding bonbonnieres, candles make an excellent sustainable gifting item. But, to make your gift more thoughtful, you can add essential oils to your candles. Mixing essential oils for candles not only gives your candles a unique aromatic profile but also adds a touch of personalisation that makes your gift more beautiful and heartfelt. But, the main reason why I love adding essential oils to my candles is because they give the candles a luxe feel, and I find the process extremely calming and fun.

Safety Tips When Using Essential Oils in Candles

Don’t forget to follow these safety tips when using essential oils in candles.

  • If you like to light candles for longer hours like during study sessions, make sure your room has good ventilation.

  • While making DIY candles, follow the proper mixing ratios for essential oils to make safe and therapeutic candles.

How much does it cost to start making candles?

I cannot stress upon enough how easy candle making is, but did you know that it's pocket friendly too? The ingredients such as wicks, soy wax, beeswax and funnels are generally low priced and are readily available in online and offline stores .

It is the volatile ingredients like essential oils and fragrance oils that are expensive and need a careful selection.

This is where Aromachology oils comes into the scene. We take utmost pride in offering a wide variety of 100% natural bulk essential oils, fragrance oils, tin containers for candles and more. Discover our tiered pricing options that are perfect for small DIY projects and for budding businesses.
