Essential Oils for Blisters

Essential Oils for Blisters - Aromachology Oils

Today, I am going to talk about the best essential oils for blisters and explain how to get rid of blisters naturally.

The outbreak of blisters can make anyone uneasy- and you may be one of them.

Don't worry, I've got you covered.

Before I begin to explain how certain essential oils are good for treating blisters and how are they good at doing so, why don’t I quickly explain what blisters are?

What Are Blisters?

Blisters are small pockets of fluid that form beneath the surface of your skin or on it. If you look at them closely, they'll appear as circular or oval in shape, and are clear, sometimes a little yellow or even blood filled, depending on the cause of the blister and its severity.

Here's an example of what it may look like

What are blisters

Causes of blisters

While there can be a no. of reasons why you must be experiencing these nasty things popping out, I am listing below some of the more common ones for your reference.

  • Friction: If some area of your skin has been rubbing against clothes, especially wet clothes, it can cause some blisters to come up. Another reason is ill fitting shoes. I have personally have experienced this one, long hours of walking or even running while wearing ill fitting shoes can cause blisters on your feet.
  • Burns: As if getting burnt due to hot surfaces or liquids wasn't painful enough, it also causes blisters to come up.
  • Chemical exposure: Chemical substances with an extreme pH value can form blisters on the skin upon contact. Having said that, I would also like to emphasise on the importance of proper gear while working with any chemicals. After all, prevention is better than cure!
  • Allergic reactions: Blisters are common symptoms of allergic reactions, especially skin related reactions.
  • Fever Blisters: You might know them by the name cold sores and they are contagious in nature. You will notice their outbreak mostly around mouth, chin and nose.

7 Best Essential Oils For Blisters

Finally it's time to reveal my personal favourite list of oils for for blister treatment. Save this list for future reference too and trust me, it will come in handy for overall health too.

I have tried to cover a wide variety of oils while sticking to the easily available ones so that you wouldn't need to go around searching for these essential oils with those nasty blisters.

So let's get to it and discover effective natural remedies for treating and healing blisters!

Tea Tree Essential Oil For Blisters

Tea Tree essential oil has anti-inflammatory effects that reduce prevalent inflammation which can sometimes cause pain and delayed healing.

You can dilute it and apply a few drops on the affected area to prevent any infection buildup.

The presence of active compounds such as terpinen 4-ol helps boost its antimicrobial properties ensuring no further infections are caused if the blister bursts open.

If you have been feeling itching sensation on the blister, then tea tree oil can also provide relief from that discomfort as it has a certain cooling and soothing sensation.

Lavender Essential Oil For Blisters

If you have smelt the lavender flowers (think French lavender fields), you would know of the calm and soothing scent that it possesses.

I would not be wrong to dare say that this calm nature of Lavender extends to its essential oils as well, alleviating discomfort, itching and irritation on topical application.

Its antimicrobial properties help protect the blistered area from further infection as well.

Lavender essential oil also helps tone down inflammation which is very necessary to promote healing and reduce pain caused by blisters

Chamomile Essential Oil

Didn't see chamomile making it to the list? Let me tell you that a mesmerising scent is not just what it is all about.

Chamomile oil, though a little pricey, can be a great oil to combat blisters.

Use it to reduce inflammation which can further accelerate the healing process and will help you get relief from associated discomfort.

If you apply it topically, it will give a cooling and refreshing sensation which can be a big relief.

Oregano Oil For Blisters

When you think of Oregano essential oil the most important component that should come to your mind is thymol followed by carvacrol.

Wondering what these are?

Simply put, these are the naturally occurring compounds that give oregano oil its antioxidant properties.

They also lend to it a high degree of antimicrobial properties which are key in helping you reduce inflammation and swelling.

And the result?

Relief from pain and discomfort and that is just the added bonus.

Lemon Essential Oil

One of the reasons I love citrus oils like lemon essential oil so much is because they are not just refreshing and energising but are loaded with antiseptic properties.

Lemon essential oil is very adept at cleansing and purifying infections and wounds, including blisters.

If your blister is also being itchy, then this oil is a great option for you.

Castor Oil For Blisters

Yes, I know this is not an essential oil but I couldn't have completed my list about healing blisters naturally without mentioning this simple oil.

Contrary to popular belief, Castor oil has uses that are not just limited to diluting essential oil.  You will find it to be high in lauric acid, omegas 6 and 9, possesses antioxidants as well as vitamin E.

These contents make it a favourable choice for blister relief and other skin ailments. Simply apply it on the affected areas before going to bed and let it work its magic while you sleep.

Clove Essential Oil For Blisters

Whenever I would have any tooth pain as a child, my grandfather would ask me to simply put a clove bud in mouth. And it would actually work like magic.

Clove oil is nature's potent analgesic and antimicrobe, with its usage being dated to older times for medicinal purposes

These qualifications make it a great choice for blister treatments as well.

It will help you in reducing inflammation and easing the pain. Use it to not just ensure infections don’t spread but also to alleviate the pain that comes with blisters.

How To Use Essential Oils For Blister Treatments?

Here's a simplified and practical set of steps to understand how to use essential oils for blisters on feet, hands and other parts of the body.

Make sure to read the safety guidelines also in the next section before you go all in. After all, you don't want to cause more harm by negligence.

Selecting the essential oil

This is the first and the most important step. Choosing the right essential oil means half of your battle is won.  You can pick from any of the oils that I listed in the list above depending on the state of the blister and of course, the symptoms that you are facing.

Dilute it with the right carrier oil

This one is quite straight forward. Before you apply the essential oil, you need to dilute it with a suitable carrier oil. I recommend using castor oil or coconut oil for this purpose.
To dilute the selected essential oil, all you have to do is simply add 5-7 drops of it in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. Mix both the oils thoroughly.

Your essential oil blend is now ready to be used.

Apply on the affected area

Before you begin applying this blend, you need to wash the blister and the surrounding area thoroughly.

Then gently apply this blend with cotton or clean finger tips.

Make sure you are gentle in this process and don't end up popping the blister. That's the last thing you wanna do.

Cover and monitor

You may now either cover the blister with a sterile bandage or gauze. This is completely optional.

Now you need to monitor the affected area for any further discomfort or allergy. If any of those signs show up then remove the bandage and clean the blister once again and if the symptoms worsen then seek medical help.

Essential Oil Blend Recipe For Blisters

While most of these essential oils are fine to be used solo (provided they’re aptly diluted), creating blends can sometimes prove to be more effective too!

This is in case you want to take the whole experience to the next level.

One recipe I’d recommend you to try out

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (you can pick fromcoconut, jojoba or castor oil)
  • 1 drop each of tea tree
  • 1 drop of lavender oil
  • 1 drop of chamomile essential oil

Steps

  1. Mix the oils thoroughly to make sure you’ve properly diluted them.
  2. Apply a small amount of the blend around the blister.
  3. Avoid direct contact with the blister.
  4. Cover the blister with a sterile dressing to ensure it doesn’t get disturbed any further.
  5. Use the blend as directed.
  6. Avoid excessive usage as it can cause further issues

Precautions and Safety Guidelines

While essential oils are pure, naturally derived oils, they’re very potent. Improper handling during usage, especially on an existing health condition can end up doing more harm than good. It is imperative you consult a physician before using them and also ensure you don’t have any allergies.

FAQs

Can I use tea tree oil on blisters?

Yes, you can use tea tree oil on blisters, not open blisters though. Make sure you dilute it with a carrier oil before applying.

How do you get rid of blisters on your feet naturally?

Ensure your feet are clean, but don’t use harsh chemical or alcohol based soaps for the same. Keep the feet dry, moisture can make things worse for you.
Feet blisters are very commonly caused by ill-fitting shoes. Make sure you use proper footwear and socks to avoid friction.

What do you soak blisters in?

Considering how moisture can worsen your blister’s condition, it is best to avoid soaking them altogether. Keeping the area clean and dry is key to a faster healing time.
